Message from the Chief
The Vernon Township Fire Department (VTFD) provides fire and emergency medical services to Vernon Township, including Fortville and McCordsville. Formed in 2019, VTFD merged the two volunteer departments and consolidated resources and personnel in order to continue to meet the needs of the growing community. The Vernon Township Fire Protection Territory was formed by unanimous consent by the Vernon Township Board, Fortville Town Council and McCordsville Town Council. This decision allowed the fire tax levy to be improved to allow for growth of the fire department.
We currently provide coverage with 24/7 staffing from Station 431 in Fortville and Station 8 in McCordsville. Construction on a new station (432) in McCordsville is slated to begin in the spring. A new ambulance was placed in service in 2020. By providing paramedic service to the community, the department was able to eliminate a contract with a private ambulance service and capture revenue to offset the cost of providing service. The department is expecting the delivery of two new fire engines in the fall to replace an aging fleet. These two engines will represent modernization of fire protection and provide more efficient response and help to lower maintenance costs.
I am proud to represent the men and women of VTFD. I have challenged them to place the community above themselves by providing aggressive service. What do I mean by aggressive? When we respond to your fire or other emergency, our goal is to solve your protect your life and solve your problem as quickly as possible. We will always strive to be well trained, mentally prepared, and action oriented to do so. When we interact with you during situations not threatening your life and property, we will do so with a softer and compassionate approach. Both ends of the spectrum require the same level of service, although a different approach.
Our personnel have stepped up to every challenge presented to them over the last couple of years. It hasn't been easy, change never is. But we do not exist for easy. We exist to serve you. I am confident our personnel will continue to meet the challenge in the future.
Yours in service,
Chad Abel, Fire Chief
